  1. HAMAS (Islamic Resistance Movement)

  3. Description 
  4. HAMAS was formed in late 1987 as an outgrowth of the Palestinian branch of 
  5. the Muslim Brotherhood and has become Fatah's principal political rival in 
  6. the occupied territories.  Various elements of HA-KAS have used both 
  7. political and violent means, including terrorism, to pursue the goal of 
  8. establishing an Islamic Palestinian state in place of Israel.  HAMAS is 
  9. loosely structured, with some elements working openly through mosques and 
  10. social service institutions to recruit members, raise money, organize 
  11. activities, and distribute propaganda.  Militant elements of HAMAS, 
  12. operating clandestinely, have advocated and used violence to advance their 
  13. goals.  HAMAS's strength is concentrated in the Gaza Strip and a few areas 
  14. of the West Bank.  It has also engaged in peaceful political activity, such 
  15. as running candidates in West Bank chamber of commerce elections.

  19. Activities 
  20. HAMAS activists--especially those in the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Forces--have 
  21. conducted many attacks against Israeli civilian and military targets, 
  22. suspected Palestinian collaborators, and Fatah rivals.

  25. Unknown number of hardcore members; tens of thousands of supporters and 
  26. sympathizers.

  28. Location/Area of Operations 
  29. Primarily the occupied territories, Israel, and Jordan.

  31. External Aid 
  32. Receives funding from Palestinian expatriates, Iran, and private benefactors 
  33. in Saudi Arabia and other moderate Arab states.  Some fundraising and 
  34. propaganda activity take place in Western Europe and North America.

  36. June 26 1995:
  37. Suicide bomber detonated a cart wounding three Israeli soldiers. Ma'wya Roka 
  38. was said to be a member of HAMAS.

  40. June 6, 1995:
  41. 45 activists of the militant Islamic group HAMAS arrested.

  43. May 15, 1995:
  44. Sayid Abu Musameh, a high-ranking Hamas official, was convicted and sentenced
  45. for writing "seditious" newspaper articles.

  47. March 1995:
  48. Abd a-Samed Harizat, of HAMAS, died in detention at the hands Shin Bet.

  50. 1994:
  51. More than 100 civilians died in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza last year due
  52. to activities of HAMAS or PIJ (Palestinian Islamic Jihad).
